KALAMA

Eight kilometres north of Archer’s Post, and abutting the northern boundary of Samburu National Reserve, is the immense 384-sq-km Kalama Community Wildlife Conservancy (admission incl camping US$40), which opened in 2004. It hosts wildlife, including Grevy’s zebras, elephants and reticulated giraffes, and acts as a vital wildlife corridor for animals migrating between the Samburu and Marsabit areas. The road network is still undeveloped, but the sheer dearth of other visitors means that you generally have the place to yourself. One big attraction of a visit here over Samburu reserve is that walking is allowed and local Samburu guides lead morning bush walks (US$10). It’s also easy enough to base yourself here and do game drives in neighbouring Samburu (though you’ll need to pay entrance fees).

If you want to linger in this magnificent slab of wild Africa then you can either camp in one of the three pleasant shady sites or you can go to the opposite extreme and stay in one of the most spectacular lodges in Kenya. So perfectly designed is the Italian-run Saruni Samburu Lodge (www.sarunisamburu.com; s/d full board US$770/1300; ) that its ‘tents’ virtually melt into the rocky bluff on which it’s located. When we say tents we don’t of course mean the sort of tents you used on cub scouts camping weekends. Oh no, we mean tents with stone bath tubs, open-air showers, terraces, designer-chic furnishings, heavenly beds and views, overlooking the northern savannah lands, that are quite simply out of this world. Throw in an infinity pool, superb Italian–Kenyan fusion cooking and attentive staff and you get a place to stay that gives any hotel in the world a run for its money.
